Internal flights in Costa Rica Prove a Popular Travel Alternative

Although nearly half of tourists visiting Costa Rica choose to rent a car,  many are now opting for domestic flights to reduce their travel time. The availability of internal flights in Costa Rica has increased dramatically in the past few years. Demand has grown as more travelers recognize the benefits of considerably reduced travel times to the country’s top beach vacation destinations.  For many people, domestic flights are becoming the most convenient alternative, especially if you want to travel to different areas of Costa Rica during your vacation.

The roads in Costa Rica have dramatically improved in recent years, however,  not everyone’s idea of the perfect vacation in  paradise is  negotiating unknown roads or asking for directions in a foreign language. If you have landed in San Jose and don’t want to drive two and a half hours to Playa Manuel Antonio, or  five hours to Playa Tamarindo, book an internal domestic flight which takes no longer than 45 minutes to an hour. The majority of flights leave Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela and Tobias Bolanos Airport located in Pavas, San Jose.

Light aircraft flights in Costa Rica operate on a daily timetable and are the most economical option.  Return flights are available to many parts of Costa Rica, for example, if you wanted to travel to Playa Tamarindo a round trip ticket from Tobias Bolanos airport would cost approximately $290 (depending on the season) with a flight duration of just fifty minutes.

Helicopter flights in Costa Rica are also available, but are more expensive with prices ranging between $800 -$3000. The price of a helicopter flight depends on the final destination and amount of people.

It is important to inquire about the amount of luggage that is permitted on your domestic flight. In most cases earlier bookings mean greater savings. Internal domestic flights in Costa Rica are available to Drake Bay in the South Pacific,  Liberia, Tamarindo, Nosara and Tambor in the Nicoya Peninsula and Quepos and Manuel Antonio in the Central Pacific.
