The White Beaches
One of the primary reasons for ever hopping on a plane to Costa Rica is to visit our country’s extraordinary and popular beaches. From luminous stretches of white sand beaches to beautiful, sparkling black sand beaches, you will want to visit all of our beaches and take in the serenity, vitality and peace that comes along with the relaxation provided from seemingly endless strands of Costa Rica beachfront.
As the city of Jaco, has the closest beach to Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), approximately a 2‐hour drive from San Jose, Playa Jaco (Jaco Beach) is one of the most popular tourist destinations and beaches to visit for those who are just flying in and wanting to kick back and relax as quickly as possible. Don’t be fooled by this little beach town. With Jaco’s ongoing water sports and significant nightlife, there is no end to the activities in which you can indulge yourself. You can choose to stay in either the small, but intensely popular beach town of Jaco, or take a taxi just a few minutes further south to Costa Rica/Playa Hermosa.
Big Surf
Playa Hermosa, Puntarenas, home to some of the biggests breaks on all of Costa Rica’s Pacific side, has over six miles of uninterrupted beach that is relatively secluded and just a short jog from Jaco. It, too, is known for its variety of aquatic activities along with its large waves, immense swells, and extremely popular annual surfing competitions.
Though not for the faint of heart amongst surfers, in Playa Hermosa you can also find serenity and peace on its long stretches of luxurious black sand beaches. Be sure to make your ATM runs when you’re near a hotel or restaurant as Playa Hermosa is so tranquilo that you will not find any ATMs along the beach. And if you are here to have a good time, both day and night, when you have finished your day in the sunshine, it is best to head the short 10 minutes back north to Jaco to revel in the nightlife.
Surf’s Up
Throughout the year, particularly November through April (during our dry season), Tico surfers to gringos and numerous international surfers can be found at Playa Jaco. Playa Jaco, being a noteworthy surf destination, makes for amazing events, such as surfing competitions that bring crowds of people to Jaco from all over Costa Rica, the U.S. and beyond.
There is nothing more thrilling than visiting a surfer’s dream beach, of distinct interest to people around the world. You will never become bored as you are free to roam the beach, seek shelter under a palm tree when you need shade, or pay a local Tico to rent a beach lounger with an umbrella for as long as you wish at an inexpensive fee.
Suntan, find a local instructor for a surf lesson, paddle‐board or boogie board lesson, or simply dive into the waves and let the Pacific Ocean surf carry you to a place of bliss and meditation as you swim and float along during your morning or afternoon in paradise.
The Seasons
There is never a bad time to visit Playa Jaco. Even during our green season we encourage guests to pursue a Costa Rican adventure, as usually the rains last only a short period of time before the sun comes back up and dries the soft, sandy beaches in normally less than an hour. Guests who visit the quaint, yet “cool” town of Jaco often appreciate a little mid‐afternoon sprinkle to wash away the tropical temps that come with our paradise.
Playa Jaco is just one of many beautiful and significant beaches of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is most definitely a country worth traveling solely to view its beaches.
Visit Playa Jaco on the Pacific side of Costa Rica and check this wonderful place off your list of soul‐ soaring adventures.
You will never regret your trip to its beach, and the town of Jaco has an abundance of pleasures to offer its tourists in terms of beach adventure.
